Via Variety, Ming-Na Wen, Matthew Rhys, and BD Wong have been cast in the series. Wen is best known for her starring role in Mulan and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., as well as her recent stint on The Mandalorian. Rhys previously starred in The Americans and HBO’s Perry Mason. Wong has had a memorable role in both Jurassic Park and Jurassic World, as well as Mr. Robot.
Wen will provide the voice of Fong Wing, the mother of the series’ protagonist, Sam Wing (Izaac Wang). The ten episode animated series will follow 10-year old Sam and the Mogwai named Gizmo. It’s also set several decades before the first movie, as Sam and his friend, Elle (Gabrielle Green), take Gizmo on “a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside” while trying to reunite the Mogwai with his family. They will also be searching for a hidden treasure while contending with “colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore.”
Rhys will play the series’ primary villain, Riley Greene, “a power-hungry English industrialist” who has an army of evil Gremlins at his command. Riley is also searching for “the mythical treasure of the Mogwai.”
Wong will play Sam’s father, Hon Wing, and he’s the skeptic in the family who doesn’t believe in “his father-in-law’s tales of magic and adventure.” Grandpa will be voiced by James Hong, and he is also the keeper of the Mogwai’s secrets. Additionally, A.J. LoCascio will play Gizmo on the series.
Tze Chun is the showrunner and head writer for Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai; which is a co-production of Warner Bros. Animation and Amblin Entertainment. HBO Max hasn’t announced a premiere date. However, a 2021 or 2022 debut seems likely.
