HBO is Developing Game of Thrones Prequel ‘Tales of Dunk and Egg’

Next year, HBO will expand its Game of Thrones franchise with the prequel series, House of the Dragon. However, HBO’s latest GoT spinoff may be a more familiar prequel from George R. R. Martin’s novellas.

Variety is reporting that HBO is developing Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg as a one-hour drama. The stories are set 90 years ahead of Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels, which were adapted in Game of Thrones. Dunk is the nickname of Ser Duncan the Tall, while Egg is an alias for Aegon V Targaryen, a prince who befriends Dunk and squires for him. Their adventures began in The Hedge Knight, and continued in The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight.

The report states that Tales of Dunk and Egg is “a high priority for HBO.” Regardless, a writer/producer is not currently attached to adapt this project.

Variety also notes that there’s no guarantee that Tales of Dunk and Egg will go forward. At one point HBO was developing several GoT spinoffs. A pilot episode was filmed for another series in 2019, with Naomi Watts in a leading role. However, HBO cancelled that project rather than ordering it to series.

House of the Dragon is currently in production with a 2022 debut in mind.
