Bob Chapek Addresses Gina Carano’s Removal From The Mandalorian

Last month, Lucasfilm parted ways with The Mandalorian actress Gina Carano following several social media controversies. During a Disney shareholder meeting, Disney CEO Bob Chapek was specifically asked about the company having a “double standard” against conservatives.

Via Deadline, Chapek replied that he doesn’t “really see Disney as characterizing itself as left-leaning or right-leaning.” He also said that Disney stands “for values that are universal: respect, decency, integrity and inclusion and we seek to have the content that we make reflective of the rich diversity of the world we live in. And I think that’s a world we should all live in harmony and peace.”

The stockholder’s contention was that Carano and her former co-star, Pedro Pascal, committed the same offense. In 2018, Pascal described ICE’s practice of putting immigrant children in cages to Nazi concentration camps. By comparison, Carano suggested that being a conservative in America was similar to being a Jewish person in Nazi Germany.

However, Carano’s social media offenses also included misinformation about the 2020 election. She also appeared to mock trans people and anyone who wore masks to prevent the spread of COVID. Carano’s refusal to tone down her rhetoric essentially paved the way for her dismissal. It also cost Carano a chance to reprise her role as Cara Dune in any future Star Wars spinoff series. Outside of a fringe movie project, Carano doesn’t currently have any other roles lined up.
