Zatanna writer Emerald Fennell recently opened up about her script for the upcoming DC film, describing it as “scary and intense.”
After the recent news that critically acclaimed Promising Young Woman director Emerald Fennell has signed on to write the upcoming Zatanna movie, the filmmaker opened up about what she has in mind for the project. The hero typically faces off against dark magical threats which creep into the world, while she often works alongside Justice League Dark members like John Constantine and Swamp Thing.
Interestingly, J.J. Abrams is developing a Constantine project through Bad Robot Productions, the company that Emerald Fennell is working with on Zatanna. There’s been talk about various Justice League Dark projects over the years, with concept art from Doug Liman’s take on the film arriving online in 2020. But Emerald Fennell teased that her script will be an intense story. When asked if she’s up for directing the film as well as writing it (as she did with Promising Young Woman), Fennell explained that it’s “not a conversation that’s happened at all.” Take a look below.
“It’s so exciting. That’s not a conversation that’s happened at all, so I have no insight, and also, we’re still in the early days. It’s something that we’ve been working on for a while. I’ve been speaking to Bad Robot [Productions], who are amazing. You want to get the first bit right, which is the script, before you think of anything else. It’s a very specific thing – the world of superhero movies is incredibly exciting, but it’s also a new different challenge. The main thing for me is making sure that it’s really, really good. I’m such a genre fan. I’m a fan of witchcraft, magic, and comic books, and this is scary and intense.”
