Kevin Feige Almost Left Marvel Studios Over Lack Of Diversity

Avengers star Mark Ruffalo recently revealed that MCU helmer Kevin Feige almost left Marvel Studios over a lack of diversity.

There’s no doubt that Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige have been putting their best foot forward lately to make the Marvel Cinematic Universe as diverse as possible with films like Captain Marvel and Black Panther. With Shang-Chi and The Eternals on the way, Kevin Feige seems to have opened Marvel Studios to diverse creators who in turn can make their films more inclusive. It’s all the more surprising to find out that Kevin Feige, one of the most successful producers in the history of cinema, almost left Marvel Studios because of a lack of diversity.

Speaking to The Independent, star Mark Ruffalo revealed a conversation he had with Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige on the set of The Avengers. In their conversation, Kevin Feige discussed how he wanted to urge the Disney heads to let Marvel Studios take on a female-driven superhero movie. Kevin Feige expressed at the time that Ike Perlmutter most likely wouldn’t budge.

When we did the first Avengers, Kevin Feige told me, ‘Listen, I might not be here tomorrow.’ And he’s like, ‘Ike does not believe that anyone will go to a female-starring super movie.’ So if I am still here tomorrow you will know that I won that battle.’

Mark Ruffalo continued by stating how that meeting between Kevin Feige and the Disney heads changed Marvel Studios.

“That was the turning point for Marvel. Because Kevin wanted black superheroes, women superheroes, LGBT superheroes. He changed the whole Marvel universe. We now have gay superheroes, we have black superheroes, we have female superheroes – Scarlett Johansson has her movie coming out, we have Captain Marvel, they are doing She Hulk next. No other studio is being that forwardly inclusive on that level.”

It’s hard to imagine Kevin Feige leaving Marvel Studios, especially after the rapturous success that The Avengers ended up being. Without Kevin Feige, we certainly wouldn’t have gotten critical and commercial beasts like Black Panther and Captain Marvel, two films that have defined just how inclusive and successful Marvel Studios is.
