Avatar is back at the top of the box office.
Avatar has passed Avengers: Endgame at the worldwide box office.
James Cameron’s Avatar is once again the highest-grossing movie of all-time following a re-release in China. The 2009 sci-fi feature from Cameron lost the title about 18 months ago when it was dethroned by the Marvel Studios epic Avengers: Endgame, but it’s back on the number one box office spot as of today.
During its box office run, Avengers: Endgame grossed $858.37 million at the North American box office and $1.939 billion overseas for a worldwide total of $2.797 billion. At the time, Avatar stood at 2.789 worldwide but the film’s earnings this weekend pushed it to $2.798 billion.
James Cameron is currently working on four Avatar sequels for Disney, which also owns the Avengers franchise. The first of the four movies wrapped filming back in September 2020 but was recently pushed back due to the ongoing pandemic.
Here is the official synopsis for the first Avatar film:
AVATAR takes us to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on an epic adventure, ultimately fighting to save the alien world he has learned to call home. James Cameron, the Oscar-winning director of Titanic, first conceived the film 15 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not exist yet. Now, after four years of production, AVATAR, a live action film with a new generation of special effects, delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.
Avatar 2 is currently scheduled to hit theaters on December 16, 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news on James Cameron’s upcoming sequels, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more content!
