A Marvel Cinematic Universe villain and a presumably destroyed MacGuffin may make their return in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
A casting post that appeared on the audition notification website Backstage offered a brief synopsis of the film, including what appears to be the return of Baron Mordo and the Time Stone in the Doctor Strange sequel.
The description reads, “After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Dr Stephen Strange continues his research on the Time Stone. But an old friend-turned-enemy puts an end to his plans and causes Strange to unleash unspeakable evil.”

The “old friend-turned-enemy” is likely Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Karl Mordo, who had a major role in Doctor Strange as an ally of Stephen Strange, but his convictions led to a parting of ways between the two friends. As for the Time Stone, the original version was destroyed by Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. A time-displaced version was then used by the heroes to defeat the Mad Titan before being brought back to its original timeline by Captain America, which means that as of the end of Endgame, there were no Infinity Stones left in the MCU.
Director Scott Derrickson recently departed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, citing “creative differences” with Marvel. While a new director has yet to be announced, it’s said this will not affect the movie’s production schedule.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen. The film hits theaters May 7, 2021.
